Support Widens For Butterfly Appeal Recycling Programme

A mobile phones recycling initiative has been further expanded to help a local charity help more young people and families affected by child exploitation.

Mobile phone and tablet accessory and services retailer Yoo Kase at East Midlands Designer Outlet near Alfreton is now collecting disused handsets and unclaimed phones from the centre’s lost property.

These are then recycled by Sinfin-based Century Mobile and proceeds donated to Safe and Sound’s Butterfly Appeal which was commended as fundraising project of the year in the recent East Midlands Charity Awards.

The Appeal supports Safe and Sound’s work across Derbyshire to raise awareness of and support children, young people and their families across Derbyshire whose lives are affected by child exploitation.  This includes sexual exploitation, County Lines, trafficking and modern slavery.

Safe and Sound chief executive Tracy Harrison said: “We are delighted that Yoo Kase at East Midlands Designer Outlet has lent their support for the recycling project which is raising vital funds for the charity.

“They join several businesses, groups and intu Derby who joined the recycling project earlier this year.

“As people start returning to shops and their normal lives, I hope that they will continue to look out unwanted mobile phones and enable us to turn these into much-needed cash.

“The money raised is being put to good use as we are busier than ever before – supporting young people who are at risk of or are victims of exploitation and particularly those who have been at greater danger of online grooming during lockdown.

“As well as raising awareness in local communities, we have also started an evening outreach programme in areas that are popular with young people and therefore perpetrators to ensure they recognise the potential dangers and know where to turn for help.”

About CSE

In the UK today, one in 20 children suffer sexual abuse which includes child sexual exploitation.  That means that in every classroom in Derbyshire, there is at least one vulnerable young person in need of help.

Child Sexual Exploitation (commonly referred to as CSE) is a form of child sexual abuse and takes many different forms from rape and sexual assault to online grooming and encouraging children to share inappropriate images of themselves.

CSE is a particularly manipulative form of abuse and is also linked to such criminal exploitation issues such as County Lines, gangs, trafficking and modern slavery.

The key factor is that individuals or groups take advantage of young people by manipulating or deceiving them into sexual activity in exchange for something the victim needs or wants.  This could range from money and alcohol to less tangible things such as the attention that they crave at a vulnerable time in their lives.

Charity Boxers Support Safe and Sound Butterfly Appeal

Charity Boxers Support Safe and Sound Butterfly Appeal

A group of amateur boxers are hoping to emulate the immortal words of sporting great Mohammed Ali and float to their fundraising target to support local charity Safe and Sound’s Butterfly Appeal.

Ten charity boxers have chosen to support the long-established charity’s plans to expand the support it provides for children and young people across Derbyshire who are victims of or at risk of Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE).

They are among a 25-strong group who have been training at Fearon’s Gym and Boxing Academy in Osmaston Road in preparation for a charity boxing  event on Saturday September 14 at Queen’s Hall in London Road.

Safe and Sound CEO Tracy Harrison added: “Boxing and fitness is all about building confidence and self-esteem and that is just what our specialist team focus on when supporting young people to build stronger wings to transform their lives.

“The fact that everyone is supporting Safe and Sound’s Butterfly Appeal is even more of a fit with this event considering Ali’s immortal phrase ‘float like a butterfly ..sting like a bee!”

Event organiser and gym owner Clive Fearon (pictured front centre), who is a renowned personal trainer and former professional boxer, continued: “Previous charity boxing events have been very popular and raised a lot of money for local charities.

“We have recommended this group to support Safe and Sound.  It is a local charity supporting local children and young people which, as a community interest company, is totally in line with what we believe in.”

The prize on the night will be a gleaming championship belt which will be presented to the person who has raised the most for their chosen charity.

In strong contention is Chris Lloyd (32) from Allenton (pictured front second from right) who has already raised well over £1,000 including donations from Eco Drive, Spray Kings, Rapid Home Improvements and city pubs Noah’s Ark, Norman Arms and The Neptune.

He said: “I know a few people who have been supported by Safe and Sound in the past so it was a no-brainer when we were asked which charity we wanted to support.

“I’ve really enjoyed the training for this event and am still working hard to raise as much as I can.”

Dan Howie (32) from Chaddesden (pictured back second from left) will be competing in his third charity boxing event as part of his bid to lose enough weight to have surgery to remove excess skin.

Dan has already shed 26 stone following gastric sleeve surgery and has another 1.5 stone to go before he can stabilise and qualify for the final surgery.

“This has been a long journey but I am nearing my goal and raising money for this great local charity certainly helps to keep you focused.”

One of the oldest participants is Marc Stevens (40) who is Operations Manager at Safe and Sound.  At the last event, he raised £510 for the charity and also won his match in the first round.

He said: “Having raised my fitness levels, I wanted to continue and test myself with a longer bout. We have a great friendly but competitive spirit both in the ring and in seeing which of us can raise the most money.”

Safe and Sound Head of Fundraising Tom Stanyard concluded: “We are very grateful that these charity boxers have chosen to support our Butterfly Appeal.

“With the help of businesses, individuals and groups, our aim is to raise vital funds to help us to support even more young people who are vulnerable to or currently facing sexual exploitation as well as their families.”

Recycling Programme Launched To Support Butterfly Appeal

Recycling Programme Launched To Support Butterfly Appeal

A Derby charity’s fundraising appeal has got off to a flying start thanks to a recycling initiative spearheaded by a local business.

Safe and Sound recently launched the Butterfly Appeal to raise funds needed to expand its work to transform the lives of children and young people in the county who are victims of or at risk of Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE).

One of the businesses who immediately signed up to back the appeal was Sinfin-based Century Mobile.

The company is collecting old mobile phone handsets which are then recycled and all money collected is donated to Safe and Sound’s Butterfly Appeal.

Century Mobile has already collected unwanted handsets from business customers HUUB and from Derby County Football Club – raising £200 for the appeal.

Century Mobile Managing Director Scott Harrhy said: “As a business committed to supporting local communities and as the father of young children, I was determined to do all that I could to support Safe and Sound.

“We specialise in finding our customers the right mobile phone package to improve their business communications and the recycling of unwanted, obsolete and damaged handsets is therefore the perfect way for us to raise vital funds for this amazing charity.

“We are grateful to both HUUB and DCFC for helping us to get this off the ground and will be spreading the word with all of our customers to support this appeal.”

Mr Harrhy continued: “I was horrified when I met with the Safe and Sound team and learned the uncomfortable truth about the dangers that our children and young people face at the hands of these evil perpetrators.

“We all know about the dark side of the internet but I was particularly shocked about how easy it is for groomers to find and manipulate children online.

“This is therefore an issue that could affect the lives of any family – whoever they are and wherever they live.

“I would appeal to everyone to search through their office and kitchen drawers and give us their old handsets which we are happy to pick up and make it easy to contribute to this appeal.”

Safe and Sound CEO Tracy Harrison concluded: “We are very grateful to Century Mobile for quickly turning awareness about CSE into tangible action and for their customers who have already supported the mobile phone recycling initiative.

“By simply donating an old, unused handset, we can raise vital funds for the Butterfly Appeal to help us to support even more young people who are vulnerable to or currently facing sexual exploitation.

“CSE not only affects the children and young people targeted by perpetrators but their whole family and the Butterfly Appeal will enable us to support them as well as providing the vital education across the wider public to make them aware of the dangers facing our local communities.”

Local Charity Celebrates Appeal Anniversary With Service Expansion

Local Charity Celebrates Appeal Anniversary With Service Expansion

Specialist Derbyshire charity Safe and Sound has marked the first anniversary of its fundraising appeal with a three-pronged expansion of support for local young people and their families.

Safe and Sound supports children and young people across Derbyshire who are victims of or at risk of child exploitation which includes online grooming sexual exploitation, County Lines, Modern Slavery and trafficking as well as raising awareness of the issues in local communities.

The charity launched its Butterfly Appeal last summer as part of its bid to expand grassroots support for young people and their families.

Now, thanks to wide-ranging support from businesses, organisations and individuals as well as successful bids to several national trusts and foundations, Safe and Sound have appointed two more specialist support workers in new roles.

Helen West has been appointed as family support worker – providing emotional and practical to support to families of young people at risk of or victims of child exploitation.

Meanwhile, education awareness officer Angela Baker will work with young people – particularly those in hard to reach groups such as those with special educational needs and with professionals working with these young people to increase understanding of child exploitation.

Safe and Sound’s youth work team has also started a regular Friday evening outreach programme in parts of the city.

The team aims to engage with more young people, raise awareness of the dangers of child exploitation and signpost them to organisations for support and positive activities, including Safe and Sound.

Safe and Sound chief executive Tracy Harrison said: “We are so grateful to the local response to the Butterfly Appeal which is ongoing to ensure that we can support even more children, young people and their families across Derbyshire.

“The impact on the wider family of young people who have been targeted by perpetrators cannot be under-estimated and I am delighted that we now have a dedicated resource to support them.

“We already have excellent working relationships with schools and Angela’s focus will be on supporting and raising awareness amongst young people who are particularly vulnerable to grooming for a number of reasons.

“Thirdly, our new outreach programme takes Safe and Sound back into local communities with support workers visiting parks and particularly hot spots where we know from experience that young people tend to meet up and therefore attracts perpetrators who target them for their own criminal purposes.

“It is this grassroots knowledge and experience that helped lead to the successful prosecutions under Operation Retriever ten years ago and I am delighted that we now have the means to be able to get back out in local communities and proactively work with young people to highlight the dangers that they face at the hands of such individuals and groups.

“The first anniversary of our Butterfly Appeal therefore marks a milestone for Safe and Sound at an important time when young people have been more vulnerable than ever to online grooming during lockdown.

“Having these additional resources in place will mean that we can provide more face to face support as lockdown eases and increase our presence in local communities to give young people and their families the reassurance that we are here to support them with the dangers they face.”

About Safe and Sound

Formed in 2002, Safe and Sound is an inspiring Derbyshire charity that transforms young lives affected by child exploitation with innovative, hands-on programmes.

The charity works at grass root levels delivering individual support to each child as well as families and carers.  This vital support enables them to move not just to a place of safety, but emerge unshackled and undefined by their experience and enabled to reach their full potential.

The charity continues to specialise in child sexual exploitation and is now developing its services to support children and young people facing or at risk of wider exploitation which are often interlinked.  These include physical and emotional violence, neglect, modern day slavery, radicalisation and human trafficking, domestic abuse, missing episodes and County Lines.

Safe and Sound is led by former police superintendent Tracy Harrison with the support of a specialist team; an experience board of Trustees and now a team of Ambassadors who are helping to raise the profile of the charity and the issue of child exploitation.

Safe and Sound’s expertise came to the fore during the 2010 landmark case – Operation Retriever – which was Derby’s first prosecution for child sexual exploitation and abuse.  The charity’s specialist team supported every young person affected by the criminal actions of 13 defendants who were jailed in total for up to 22 years for 70 offences.
